ALFRENSIA PC UPGRADE GUIDE · 8 MIN READ
The right upgrade depends on what limits your actual workload. A graphics card may matter most for GPU-limited games, while a CPU upgrade can help in processor-limited situations. Measure first, then check platform compatibility, power requirements and the total cost.

There is no universal CPU-versus-GPU rule. The same PC can be GPU-limited in one game, CPU-limited in another, and limited by memory, storage, thermals, or software settings in a third.
What do you want to improve?
Start by defining the problem. Are you trying to increase average FPS, reduce stutter, improve minimum frame rates, move from 1080p to 1440p, render a project faster, or make multitasking smoother? These are different goals and may point to different upgrades.
- Higher resolution or graphics quality: the GPU often becomes more important because it has more pixels and effects to render.
- Very high FPS in competitive games: the CPU can become a major factor, especially at lower resolutions and settings.
- Large creative projects: the best upgrade depends on the application, effects, codecs, scene complexity, and whether it uses the CPU, GPU, memory, or several together.
- Stutters and inconsistent performance: investigate memory pressure, background tasks, thermal throttling, drivers, and storage as well as the CPU and GPU.
How to tell whether the GPU is the limit
Use a repeatable test in the game or application where you notice the problem. Monitor GPU utilisation, GPU clocks, temperature, power behaviour, CPU utilisation per core, RAM use, and frame times. A GPU that remains heavily loaded during a demanding scene while performance is below your target is a useful clue—but no single utilisation number proves the whole diagnosis.
Try a controlled change in graphics settings. If reducing resolution or GPU-heavy effects significantly improves performance, the GPU may be a major limit in that scene. If performance barely changes, the limit may be elsewhere, although some settings affect more than one component.
Do not rely solely on total CPU utilisation. A game can be limited by one or a few CPU threads even when overall CPU usage looks moderate. Also check whether the GPU is waiting on a CPU-side task, shader compilation, asset loading, or a frame-rate cap.
How to tell whether the CPU is the limit
CPU limits are more likely to matter when you target very high frame rates, play simulation-heavy or strategy games, run many background applications, or use a GPU that is much faster than the processor can feed in a particular game. But age alone is not proof that the CPU needs replacing.
Compare performance at the same settings and in the same scene. Review credible CPU/GPU benchmark testing that uses a similar configuration. Tom’s Hardware’s CPU-versus-GPU upgrade testing illustrates why results depend on the particular processor, graphics card, game, and resolution rather than a universal upgrade formula.

Before buying anything, check the common alternatives
1. Memory capacity and configuration
If your RAM is nearly full and the system is paging to storage, adding compatible memory may improve responsiveness or reduce stutter. Check total capacity, occupied slots, memory generation, supported speed, and whether a matched configuration is appropriate for your platform. More RAM does not automatically increase FPS if memory capacity is not the problem.
2. Temperatures and power limits
High temperatures or power limits can reduce clocks. Check temperatures and clock behaviour under a repeatable workload, clean airflow paths safely, and verify that cooling and power delivery are functioning as intended. Do not assume a new CPU or GPU is needed until you rule out a thermal or configuration issue.
3. Background processes and settings
Overlays, recording software, browser tabs, launchers, and background tasks can affect performance. Test with a consistent workload and sensible settings. If you stream or record while gaming, measure the combined workload rather than gaming alone.
4. Storage and asset loading
A storage upgrade can improve load times and some asset-streaming situations, but it will not usually fix a GPU rendering limit or a CPU-bound frame rate. Match the upgrade to the symptom.
A practical upgrade checklist
- Record your CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, motherboard, PSU model, monitor resolution, and target frame rate.
- Choose two or three repeatable scenes or application tasks that represent your real use.
- Record average FPS and frame-time behaviour alongside utilisation, clocks, temperatures, and memory use.
- Change one setting at a time. Compare the same scene and avoid comparing unrelated benchmarks.
- Check whether the likely upgrade is compatible with your motherboard, power supply, case, and cooling.
- Compare the complete cost of the upgrade with the cost of a balanced new build.
Should you upgrade the GPU or CPU first?
Consider the GPU first when your target games or creative workload consistently stress the graphics card and a relevant benchmark shows the GPU is limiting the result.
Consider the CPU first when your workload is processor-limited, a faster compatible CPU improves the specific task in credible testing, and the upgrade does not require an uneconomical platform rebuild.
Investigate the system first when performance is inconsistent, temperatures are abnormal, memory is exhausted, or background tasks and settings have not been controlled. The most cost-effective fix may not be a new component.
If measurements point to the graphics card, compare an option such as the PNY RTX 5070 Ti 16GB. If the workload is CPU-limited, a processor example such as the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G still requires motherboard socket, BIOS, memory and workload compatibility checks.
Check compatibility before ordering
A CPU upgrade may require a supported BIOS version, a compatible motherboard socket and chipset, suitable cooling, or new memory if the platform changes. A GPU upgrade requires checking card dimensions, PSU quality and connectors, case airflow, and display connections. Do not choose parts based on the CPU or GPU name alone.
Verify current stock, price, exact model and warranty on the relevant product page before purchasing.
Frequently asked questions
Does a bottleneck calculator tell me exactly what to upgrade?
No. Simplified calculators cannot fully represent the game, settings, resolution, memory behaviour, or your actual target. Use them only as rough context, not a buying decision.
Will a better GPU always increase FPS?
No. If the CPU or another part is already limiting the workload, the improvement can be smaller than expected.
Can a CPU bottleneck cause low GPU utilisation?
It can, but low GPU utilisation can also come from frame caps, software limits, loading, or other causes. Measure a repeatable workload before deciding.
Should I upgrade both at once?
Only if the workload and budget justify it. A staged upgrade can be more economical, provided the first upgrade is compatible and delivers a meaningful benefit.
