Design That Stands Apart
The X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD targets builders who want high-end performance without the typical gaming aesthetic. The deep-grain dark wood texture pairs with dark metal tones and a leather pull tab. As a result, the board looks more at home in a living room than a LAN party . Reviewers note that it delivers the full X870E feature set while offering a restrained look . The design also ties into the Lian Li Lancool 217 Dark case, which shares a similar color scheme .
Power Delivery and Thermal Design
The board uses a 16+2+2 twin digital VRM design with 60A power stages . An 8-layer PCB with 2X Copper and an 8+8 parallel power design maintain stable power delivery during sustained loads. The VRM cooling uses Thermal Armor Advanced with a direct-touch heatpipe and a 7 W/mK thermal pad. In addition, the PCB thermal plate improves thermal performance by 14% . The M.2 slots are covered by Thermal Guard L and Thermal Guard Ext. The M.2 EZ-Flex design provides a flexible baseplate that improves contact between the SSD and heatsink .
Connectivity and Expansion
The X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD offers extensive connectivity. Networking is handled by two Realtek 5GbE LAN chips and MediaTek Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.4 . The rear I/O includes two USB4 Type-C ports (40Gbps with DisplayPort Alt Mode), one USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port, five USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, and three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports . For storage, the board provides four SATA 6Gb/s ports and four M.2 slots. The expansion slots include one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot with UD Slot X, a second PCIe 5.0 slot running at x8, and a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot running at x4 .

Expert Advice & Build Considerations
PCIe Lane Sharing and M.2 Bandwidth
The M2B_CPU slot shares bandwidth with the ASMedia USB4 controller. When a device is installed in M2B_CPU, both the M.2 slot and the USB4 port operate at up to x2 bandwidth . Therefore, avoid populating M2B_CPU if you need full USB4 bandwidth. In addition, the second PCIe 5.0 slot runs at x8 and shares bandwidth with the primary x16 slot . As a result, installing a card in the second slot will drop the primary slot to x8 mode .
Memory Overclocking Requires EXPO or XMP
To reach the advertised DDR5-9000 (OC) speeds, you need memory modules with AMD EXPO or Intel XMP profiles. Because the memory controller is integrated into the CPU, actual supported speeds depend on your processor and the number of DIMMs installed .
📐 Case and Cooling Compatibility
The ATX form factor measures 30.5cm x 24.4cm, so confirm your case supports standard ATX. The board includes eight fan headers and three addressable RGB Gen2 headers plus one RGB LED header . If you plan to use the leather pull tab for cable management, note that it is a design accent rather than a structural component.

Expert Recommendation: Getting the Most from Your X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD
Before installing components, plan your M.2 and PCIe layout carefully. The M2B_CPU slot shares bandwidth with the ASMedia USB4 controller. Therefore, leave that slot empty if you need full USB4 bandwidth . In addition, the primary x16 slot drops to x8 mode when you install a card in the second PCIe 5.0 slot . For memory, enable AMD EXPO in the BIOS to reach your kit’s rated speed. The board supports up to DDR5-9000 (OC), but actual stable speeds depend on your CPU and memory modules . Update to the latest BIOS from Gigabyte’s website for best compatibility with Ryzen 9000 series processors. Because the board includes Q-Flash Plus, you can update the BIOS without a CPU installed. For storage, the M.2 EZ-Latch Click and Plus designs allow tool-free SSD installation, and the M.2 Thermal Guard covers help manage SSD temperatures .
