PC market update · October 13, 2026 · Research note based on Gartner’s preliminary Q3 figures
Worldwide PC shipments fell 22.4% year over year in Q3 2026, according to Gartner. The analyst firm says higher memory and storage costs have fed into PC prices and reduced the availability of lower-cost configurations. That is a meaningful warning sign for buyers—but it is not proof that every PC component in Egypt will immediately become more expensive.
What Gartner actually reported
Gartner estimates that worldwide shipments of desktop and laptop PCs reached 55.4 million units in the third quarter of 2026, down from 71.3 million a year earlier. Its preliminary figures show declines across all six leading PC vendors. Gartner attributed the market contraction to component-cost inflation, scarce-component allocation and a shift toward higher-priced configurations.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide PC shipments | 55.4 million | -22.4% |
| Lenovo shipments | 15.0 million | -22.4% |
| HP shipments | 10.4 million | -30.9% |
| Dell shipments | 7.6 million | -25.4% |
These are preliminary global shipment estimates—not retail sales figures for Egypt and not a forecast for the price of a particular RAM kit, SSD or graphics card. Gartner says DRAM costs in Q2 were five times higher year over year, and that PC vendors passed higher component costs through to customers.
Does this mean RAM and SSD prices will rise in Egypt?
Not automatically, and not at the same rate. Egyptian retail prices also depend on the exchange rate, import and distribution costs, existing stock, model mix, warranty channel and retailer pricing. A global shipment report is useful context, but it cannot tell us the current price or availability of an individual product in Cairo.
The practical signal is that low-cost complete systems may be harder for manufacturers to maintain when memory and storage costs rise. That can influence the configurations companies choose to build, even before every component’s retail price changes.
What PC buyers should do now
- Buy for a real workload. Choose RAM capacity, SSD size and GPU performance around the games or applications you actually use.
- Check total platform cost. A cheaper CPU can become a poor value if it forces a motherboard or memory change you did not budget for.
- Do not panic-buy. This report does not establish that every product is about to rise in price. Compare current local listings and confirm stock before deciding.
- Prioritize upgrades by bottleneck. If your current PC works well, measure what is limiting it before spending on a new build.
- Keep some capacity headroom. Avoid filling an SSD completely, and consider future projects when selecting storage—but do not pay for capacity you will not use.
Why shipments can fall while the market still sells expensive PCs
Shipment volume measures the number of machines shipped into channels, not the amount each buyer spends. If manufacturers shift toward more expensive configurations while fewer budget models are available, average selling prices can rise even as unit shipments fall. Gartner’s preliminary report describes precisely that combination. Final estimates may change as more data becomes available.

Gartner
