Windows 11 on 8GB RAM in 2026: What Microsoft Improved — and What It Doesn’t Change
Microsoft says Windows 11 26H2 improves responsiveness and multitasking on tested 8GB PCs. We explain the test conditions and what buyers should expect.

Microsoft’s November 3, 2026 update makes a useful point about PC memory: operating-system efficiency can improve the experience, but it does not make every workload fit into the same amount of RAM. The company reports better responsiveness on 8GB systems and faster multitasking in a specific lab scenario. Those results need context before becoming a buying recommendation.
What Microsoft measured
Microsoft reports up to 20% better responsiveness on 8GB PCs and up to 40% faster completion in a multitasking test. The test used one HP OmniBook 3 with 8GB RAM and a Snapdragon X Plus processor, opening 20 Edge tabs, a 4K video, Office files, Outlook and File Explorer. These are Microsoft’s measurements, not a universal benchmark across every laptop, app or game.
When 8GB can be suitable
Everyday tasks
Moderate browsing, documents, email, video calls and light productivity can be workable on a well-optimised PC.
Heavier workloads
3D work, advanced video editing, demanding games with background apps and large projects can need more memory.
Why workload matters
RAM is shared by Windows, drivers, browsers, applications and sometimes integrated graphics. More capacity gives workloads room to coexist and reduces reliance on slower storage when memory pressure rises. Microsoft itself says demanding work such as 3D modelling, advanced video editing and large-scale data processing benefits from 16GB or more.
Before buying an 8GB PC
- Check whether memory is upgradeable or soldered.
- Confirm the processor and graphics configuration, not just the RAM number.
- Consider your actual mix of tabs, meetings, games and creative apps.
- For a new gaming or creator PC, treat 16GB as a more practical starting point and choose more when the workload justifies it.
